Honoring a Legacy of Service: The David Sundwall Lectureship Endowment

A Pioneer Who Never Forgot His Roots

David N. Sundwall, MD, exemplified what it means to dedicate one's life to serving others. Despite achieving the highest levels of public health leadership in our nation, he always introduced himself simply as "a family doctor from Murray." This humility, combined with his extraordinary accomplishments, makes Dr. Sundwall's legacy one worth continuing for generations of future healthcare leaders.

Dr. Sundwall's journey began at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree in 1969. As one of the earliest medical students in the United States to train in the newly established specialty of family medicine, he was a true pioneer who spent his career opening doors for others to walk through.

His two decades in Washington, D.C., were marked by numerous contributions that helped transform American healthcare policy. As director of the health staff for the U.S. Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee, he helped shape federal health policies that benefited millions of Americans. His time as administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration and as Assistant Surgeon General in the U.S. Public Health Service positioned him at the nexus of national healthcare decision-making.

When Dr. Sundwall returned to Utah, he actively exercised his wealth of experience to benefit his home state. As Executive Director of the Utah Department of Health for six years, he applied the same dedication and vision that had made him effective on the national stage. Throughout this period, he continued volunteering at clinics, such as the HealthCare for the Homeless Project, which serves medically underserved populations in Salt Lake City, never losing sight of the individual patients behind policy decisions.

A Teaching Legacy

In 2011, Dr. Sundwall joined the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine's Division of Public Health as a professor, where his true passion for mentorship flourished. For seven years, he shared his experiences and expertise with students, helping to shape the next generation of public health leaders. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, as he provided guidance and inspiration to countless students who now carry forward his commitment to service.

An Enduring Vision

The inaugural David N. Sundwall Lectureship on Public Health Policy, established in 2017, continues to bring renowned public health policy leaders to Utah, ensuring that Dr. Sundwall's commitment to learning and knowledge-sharing lives on. This lectureship represents just the beginning of how his legacy can continue to impact public health education and policy.

Why This Endowment Matters

Dr. Sundwall's life demonstrates that the most outstanding leaders are those who combine vision with humility, ambition with service, and achievement with compassion. By supporting the David Sundwall Lectureship Endowment, donors invest in cultivating these same qualities in future leaders in public health.

As Dr. John Barrett noted, "Dr. Sundwall embodied the mission of the public health field through his care and concern for others." Your support of this endowment ensures that his extraordinary example will continue to inspire and enable others to follow in his footsteps, creating a multiplying effect of service that extends far beyond any single career or generation.

Supporting this fund ensures that donors honor not just a remarkable individual, but the timeless values he represented: excellence in service, dedication to the underserved, and the profound impact that one person committed to making a difference can have on countless lives.

The minimum threshold to create an endowment is $25,000, which must be reached by September 19th, 2027. If the threshold isn't met, the funds will be used towards the lecture series.
